Quality Health Care Close to Home

Cleveland Area Hospital is a community-owned Critical Access Hospital, serving the rural area approximately half an hour west of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Cleveland Area Hospital has served our community for over fifty years and employs about one

hundred and fifty professionals, including six full-time Physician/Providers.

Besides a top-notch ER, treating between 500-600 patients per month, Cleveland Health Systems

has Physical Rehabilitation, a Family Practice Clinic, Cardiology Services, 24/7 Lab and Radiology, MRI, CT, and Digital Mammography.  Our nursing staff supports a full time Hospitalist specializing

in Swing Bed (Skilled Nursing), Infusion, and Wound Care services.

Our History

In March of 1961, community members came together to discuss the need for a hospital facility. Pioneered by two like-minded physicians, Joe Hanson, DO, and M.L. Saddoris, MD., Cleveland Area Hospital Foundation was chartered by the state of Oklahoma in December that same year.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Tulsa Mabee foundation, funds raised by the hospital foundation, and land donated by long-standing community members Mr. and Mrs. Swan, the dream of building the hospital became a reality.  Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on July 20, 1962, and Cleveland Area Hospital provided medical care to their first patient in August of 1963.

Community support is integral to the survival of rural hospitals and Cleveland community members have continued to show their support. One of the most direct displays of support occurred when the community members passed the one-cent sales tax in 1988 for hospital usage.

Where We Are Now

Cleveland Area Hospital is the only hospital in Pawnee county, which inserts responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity to have a positive impact on the future of rural healthcare in

Oklahoma. We are proud to be an independent, self-managed, non-profit healthcare system governed by a board of trustees comprised of local community members. Stable management

and strong leadership preserve the culture and stability of Cleveland Area Hospital by prioritizing organizational fit, character, and work ethic when considering additions to the team.

The organization consists of 150 employees working towards the same goal of providing exceptional and compassionate patient care. The entire hospital team works dynamically to

ensure financial sustainability and access to quality, steadfast healthcare in

the rural population they serve. The members of Cleveland Area Hospital

believe in sharing resources, extending outreach efforts beyond our

borders, and developing community partnerships. They accomplish this

by actively participating in community events, such as health fairs and

blood drives; as well  as by hosting various activities that include the

surrounding critical access and rural hospitals.

One of the many patient populations Cleveland Area Hospital has the privilege and honor to provide medical treatment to is the 65 and over demographic.  The organization demonstrates commendation to these patients by engaging in senior outreach activities such as bingo, birthday celebrations, and health talks.   Additionally, CAH offers diabetic nutrition education and financial counseling to the community at no cost.  The City of Cleveland, Cleveland Public Schools, and Cleveland Area Hospital are working together to improve the total health and wellness of the community.

The Hospital auxiliary committee awards an annual                                                                           scholarship in support of a Cleveland High School                                                                             senior interested in attaining a career in healthcare. In                                                                       alignment with the auxiliary, Cleveland Area Hospital firmly believes that investing in the youth of our society is fundamental to the growth and sustainability of our community. Therefore, CAH collaborates with the Cleveland school district to provide events such as free sports physicals, coaches clinics, and interview skills night for students entering the workforce.  Cleveland Area Hospital also implemented a student shadowing program in 2016 to provide local high school students who are interested in a career in the healthcare industry the opportunity to shadow our providers.

To exhibit diligence to our patients, CAH continually aspires to provide the industries

leading technology. For example, new Cat Scan and X-ray equipment were purchased

in 2017 and positively impact patients by advancing imaging quality, reducing

radiation exposure, and increasing the accuracy of diagnosis. Fiber optic

internet and phone services were recently installed, as well as transitioning

to a more dependable and efficient electronic medical record provider. With

the advances in technology, new workstations were purchased to enhance

work performance. To increase patient and employee safety, security

measures were addressed by establishing badge access campus-wide.

Patient and visitor access to the hospital's main entrance was improved when automatic sliding doors were installed in 2017.

In 2015, the Oklahoma Office of Rural Health conducted a community health needs assessment for Cleveland Area Hospital (see the full version at www.clevelandareahospital.com). The survey results indicated a need for additional services, which included increasing the number of primary care providers.  The survey also revealed the desire of the community to have surgical services, dialysis, pain management, and specialty services such as Cardiology, Dermatology, and OB/GYN available locally. Cleveland Area Hospital’s primary service areas are Pawnee, Osage, Creek, and Payne counties, as well as small areas of Tulsa and Noble counties. The central service area radius is about 25 miles with the extended service area radius near 45 miles. The community response to the health needs assessment fuels our vision for growth and service expansion with a regional focus.
